WHERE DO THE CELEBRITIES LIKE TO GO?

For this month´s edition we have the pleasure of talking to Michael McCann, one of Australia’s best known hockey players, who lives in Germany at the moment but has been around the world a lot when playing as striker in the Australian National hockey team. As he has seen lots of places he can certainly give us a clue as to where to spend our next holiday or short trip. Before hearing about his favourite spots we first wanted to know a little more about Mike himself and to find out more about his life up to now. When he started to play hockey at the age of four, no one thought of his big career which would come up some years later. 'By the time I was thirteen years old all I did was playing hockey. Of course I still went to school but only doing what was absolutely necessary and then going straight back to the hockey field.’ Mike admits. ‘Fortunately my parents always supported me with my hockey career so there was no pressure from their side in terms of doing something “proper”.'  Looking back now, being on the National hockey team was very hard work as it meant eighty-hour weeks, strict diet and sacrificing your personal life. 'I guess it was worth it; we were a great team and “yes” I would do it the same way again. Winning the gold medal with the Australian national field hockey team in 2004 at the Olympics in Athens was one of the best moments of my life,' replied Mike while I was asking him if it was the right decision. In 2007 he retired from international hockey after playing one year in Barcelona. For the last two years Mike has been working as a full-time hockey trainer in Germany where he plans to stay another two years. And after that? Any plans for a family of your own? '…......We will see', Mike answers with a big smile.

When asked about his favourite places it doesn´t take a moment for him to reply 'Barcelona'. 'It is the most beautiful city. Friendly people, near the seaside.....I would like to go back there one day.'  His special tips for us in Barcelona are the “Ramblas” and the old Gothic Quarter, which are both right in the middle of Barcelona. 'In second place for favourite spots it would have to be Sydney. People over there are very relaxed so you might have to adjust to that. There are beautiful beaches and one highlight is “Watson Bay” where you find lovely little restaurants next to the beach. They are quite expensive but it is definitely worth the money,' says Mike dreamily. Well, this is his hometown, so getting sentimental seems quite normal here. As Mike has been to many places like New Zealand, The Fiji Islands, India, USA, England, etc., there are surely other nice locations he has seen and could recommend. So we might invite him back here to hear some more about New Zealand and the Fiji Islands next time.
