Mike McCann: Straight report (professional career)

In 2004 he won not only win the gold medal in the Olympic Games in Athens but also he experienced his most emotional moment in his whole career. He was known as an aggressive player but as he said, “You have to be, it is part of the game.”

We are talking about Mike McCann, 32 and born in Sydney, a former field hockey player and now coaching the hockey team MHC in Mannheim. He started playing when he was four years old and had always great support from his family. As hockey is one of the  so-called “non-professional” sports it was not always easy for him because training 35 hours a week was without pay. So what was his ambition, why did he keep on going? Winning the Olympic Games was something he had never done for his country before. He wasn’t really successful in school; he did the work which was compulsory but never more than that. So hockey was his passion, a part in his life he was interested in and very good at. He wanted to win, which was the reason he seemed to be so aggressive, not physically but verbally. It was just his way to calm down on the field and to deal with the pressure and his ambition. He participated in nine international tournaments and travelled all over the world. Fortunately he has never suffered serious injuries during his career. Besides doing sports, travelling is one of his hobbies. His favourite city is Barcelona where he has lived for a couple of years.

In 2007 he retired from hockey due to the time it took. He was under pressure when he decided to leave the team because he did not want to let them down. Despite the time it took he confirmed that it was worth doing it and he enjoyed achieving so much success with field hockey. For two years he has been coaching the field hockey team in Mannheim. He works full time and his contract continues for two more years. Concerning his future he would like      to stay in hockey for a period of time.
