Former hockey player for the Australian National team, Olympic gold medal winner and full-time hockey trainer Mike McCann gives insights in a life between Mannheim, Barcelona and Sydney.
You have lived in Mannheim for two years now. Did you have any experience of Germany before you moved there?
Yes, I used to live in Hamburg for three or four months in 2007. I didn’t like the city as people weren’t nice there. I went back to Spain soon after.
What did you think the Germans would be like before you moved there?
I didn’t know much about Europe to be honest with you. But I experienced them as uptight and over-focussed on work or college. They didn’t seem to have much fun playing hockey and couldn’t really enjoy themselves. The ones who have been abroad seem to be more easy-going.
What do you miss most from home?
My nieces and nephews - I love kids. Also, the weather and beaches.
And what’s the first thing you do when you get home to Sydney?
I go to the beach and enjoy the sun and some beers.
What aspects of life do you appreciate in Mannheim?
Well, it’s a good opportunity for work and future. It’s also in a good position for travelling.
How about Barcelona?
It’s the most beautiful place. I go back there two or three times a year. I love the food in Spain.
What do you think about German food?
Ok. I’m not big into the sausages. But “Schnitzel” is nice. And I like the German beer; a “Weizen” after training.
What are your inside tips for Barcelona?
You have to stay in the city. The old gothic area is beautiful. You also have to see a football match of FC Barcelona.
What do you recommend in Sydney?
Again, stay in the city. Darling Harbour is nice. You also have to visit beaches, for example Bondi Beach. I prefer Coogee Beach, though. It’s not as crowded.
Do you have any other advice?
Yes, I do, concerning cultural knowledge. If you go there be relaxed!
